Diversos especialistas sostienen que WiMAX es la evolución natural de las redes de banda ancha inalámbricas que hoy tienen presencia en diversas latitudes. Durante 2006, el IEEE ratificó la norma 802.16e-2005 de WiMAX Móvil, y se han implementado productos fijos certificados por el WiMAX Forum.
Por otro lado, los fabricantes de chipsets han lanzado un tipo de plataforma que soportará la funcionalidad de WiMAX móvil en dispositivos y en equipos para clientes.
En sintonía con estas variables, durante 2006 Motorola aumentó a más de 20 el número de pruebas de WiMAX móvil 802.16e en ejecución en todo el planeta. La firma también anunció acuerdos para sistemas WiMAX con Sprint Nextel, grupo de telecomunicaciones estadounidense con sede con sede en Reston (Virginia,Estados Unidos), y Clearwire Corporation, operador líder mundial en banda ancha inalámbrica fundada por el pionero norteamericano de las telecomunicaciones Craig McCaw con sede en Kirkland (Washington, Estados Unidos) con Wateen Telecom, proveedor de servicios móviles GSM con sede en Pakistán y Agni Systems Ltd. en Bangladesh.
